Does network marketing or multi level marketing (MLM) still work in the age of the internet?

We know it has worked in the past but do the old methods still work in the 21st century?

Is there a modern way to do this now? If there are successful people today what is it that they are doing? Has the industry had its day? This way of doing business has been around for a long time, maybe too long.

And here's another thing - there is an unbelievable amount of hype found within the industry. Makes me wonder why? To me, hype equates to dishonesty, so why the need for it? Perhaps it's just a way of motivating the potential newcomers. Ugh! Puts me right off. If this is the only method they have for motivating new distributors then they are sadly lacking in ideas.

However, having said this, there are currently several hundred MLM companies in existence. And many 'mainstream' leading companies distribute some, or all, of their products through this method of distribution. A sizeable MLM company can expect to be doing business in over 60 countries.

So it's still got its appeal despite the huge number of disgruntled distributors - not to mention the scam merchants who have done their best to discredit this way of doing business.

You have heard it said that network marketing still remains 'the ordinary person's best chance to earn an extraordinary income'. Well it does require ordinary people - loads of them. It's the basis of the whole system.

Yet 97% of people getting into the business fail. So with a steady turnover of unhappy distributors it makes you wonder who's buying AND who's selling? And can the successful people of the past ever be described as 'ordinary'?
