"You Are Involved In Direct Marketing No Matter What They Say"

It's not direct marketing or even selling - it's about sharing!

Isn't this what we were all told when we were first being recruited? All you need to do is 'share' with people. You just share your product and your opportunity. Oh boy, did that make us feel better - nice warm fuzzies inside.

But what does this mean? So this isn't a business after all?

What sort of message is this to give to a new prospect or distributor. You want her to join you in an exciting and potentially lucrative business that ... er, by the way ... isn't really a business at all.

Let's look at that. A business requires products or services to be sold. If you are running a small business from home then you are in direct sales in some form or another. Problem is, on the whole people don't like sales - particularly direct sales. We don't like being 'sold'. And if we are doing the selling, we don't like the rejection.

Yet network marketing needs a lot of ordinary people. It's the basis of the business. Yet ordinary people don't like selling. If they knew they had to sell they wouldn't join.

Knowing this, our upline needs to convince us that direct marketing isn't necessary. The problem with this approach is that it sets the whole industry up as being somewhat 'mickey mouse'. A business that is not a business. A profession that is not professional.

This makes it so hard for the new distributor. Who can take her seriously? And if she gets a new recruit, that recruit experiences the same confusion. She knows not what she is. She may even feel that she is involved in something shady.

Far better for the industry to accept that direct sales is a major component of what they do and teach the basics of selling. Far better that they produce professional people well versed in the art of direct marketing.

Here's the thing. Selling happens anytime you are asking another person for money in exchange for something.

However, selling IS NOT about your product. It IS NOT about your opportunity.

Selling is about people. It is about you. And it is definitely about your prospect.

Yes, you need a good product. Yes, you need a good opportunity. But first you need to sell yourself. People buy from people they like and trust. You need to learn these skills.

Here's another thing. Selling is about providing SOLUTIONS for people. If your prospect doesn't need a solution then she is not a prospect. No matter how good the product - you have no sale. If she has no need for the benefits your MLM business can give her, she is not a prospect.

Network marketing is not about sharing. It is about direct marketing and sales.
